Jiu Jitsu Belts

Getting your Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt can easily be a 10-year commitment. It’s no secret that unlike many martial arts that give out belts in just a few months, BJJ is different. Even the toughest competitors get their black belt… Click To Tweet

But these days, belts are also blurred. In fact, there are blue belts that are known for beating black belts. Take the case of Roberto Jimenez during his blue belt days, for instance. Or perhaps, the AOJ kids who were able to perform well even in mixed belts format tournaments. But what do the Jiu Jitsu belts mean? In this case, let’s take a closer look at the adult belts.

White Belts (The First of All Jiu Jitsu Belts)

White belts are known to be building blocks your BJJ journey. In some BJJ schools in different parts of the world, this is actually the majority of their members. And in some instances, this is the lifeblood of many gyms financially.

As for BJJ, this is where basic movements are established. Also, it is common in white belts to unlearn many wrong habits that aren’t useful to grappling. You will understand the basic concepts of break falls, bridge, and hip escapes.

Blue Belts

Now, blue belts these days are given usually after 2 years of training. This restriction comes from the IBJJF Rules and is the only Jiu Jitsu belt with this type of restriction. However, there are still some “old school” gyms that will wait for four years before giving someone their blue belt. In reality, there are a great number of blue belts. There are kids who grew into an adult belt who were actually training for the past 8 years.

A blue belt is where you will be able to learn submissions and be able to defend yourself against someone who is untrained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Also, a blue belt in some instances can already teach basic BJJ. Braulio Estima even mentioned that he learned his first BJJ lessons from a blue belt.

Purple Belt

As you progress to purple belt, it is at this stage when your game begins to develop. You already have a grasp of how you plan to do submissions and implement a game plan. At times, competitive purple belts become specialists of their game. In fact, it is often times enough to beat some black belts in case they make the mistake of playing the purple belt’s “A game”.  This is one of the most important Jiu Jitsu Belts in the order. Many see it as the begininngs of your own personal style of jiu jitsu.

Brown Belt

Because of the experimentations and refinement experienced during purple belt years, a brown belt should be able to have a tighter game in different positions. Basically, a brown belt should be able to lessen the mistakes by practicing weak positions. A brown belt is all about forcing his or her will on an opponent especially when it comes to setting up traps that ultimately lead towards a submission.

Black Belt

Being a black belt, it is about gaining a deeper understanding of concepts and why techniques work. What makes black belts different from other belts is their ability to figure out positions based on these concepts. It means that you could be shown a totally new move and still be able to figure out the holes of a particular move.

As a black belt, it is important that he or she is also capable of teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to people with different knowledge of the martial art. A black belt is someone who should know how to teach BJJ to white belts to their fellow black belts.

Given the growth of the sport, there is a growing number of enthusiasts doing BJJ. In fact, celebrities are even trying Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In reality, Jiu Jitsu belts may mean differently from one gym to the next. However, remember that a belt is only a symbol.

As with other martial arts, the progress of a student is marked with a series of coloured belts. Unlike other martial arts where a Black Belt marks a person’s proficiency in a style, in Jiu-Jitsu the rank of Black Belt is conferred to individuals who have mastered the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.http://carlsongraciebjj.co
